With four official languages and bordered by the Netherlands, Germany, Luxembourg and France, Belgium offers huge potential for cross-border e-commerce. Belgium’s own e-commerce market was slow to develop, so Belgian shoppers have been buying fashion, leisure, health & beauty and electronic goods from across the EU for many years now.
A small but densely-populated country, Belgium’s lack of language barriers and physical borders, and high internet penetration rate, makes it an appealing market for many retailers. And despite the unique identities of Wallonia, Flanders and Brussels, Belgians are united in their demand for high-quality delivery that’s tailored to their needs.
With Belgian shoppers spending an average of €1,610 per year online, the time is now to target this fast-growing e-commerce market at the heart of the EU.
Belgian shoppers commonly use credit and/or debit cards to make online purchases (42%), but apps such as Bancontact, or personal banking apps, are also used by 8% and 11% of shoppers, respectively.
61% of Belgian shoppers buy fashion items online, including clothes, shoes and accessories. 50% purchase travel services, while just under half of Belgian shoppers purchase leisure goods, computers and electronics, and health and beauty products.
The popularity of Dutch retailer Bol.com in Belgium shows just how easy it is to expand into Belgium from neighbouring countries. As well as Bol, e-commerce marketplaces Coolblue and Zalando enjoy a significant share of the Belgian market, alongside relative newcomers Amazon and Apple.
1) What are the main characteristics you see concerning the Benelux region’s e-commerce market size?
Online food sales in the Netherlands have increased by 58% in 2020. This is a huge jump which shows that new consumers have entered the online grocery market. We estimate around a quarter of e-shoppers will continue making digital purchases despite shops reopening and we expect a small number to avoid physical stores altogether.
2) What, for you, has been the most exciting recent development in e-commerce?
More brands are now opening new cross-border markets thanks to the boost that lockdown gave to online sales. Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, we’ve seen an increase in webshops connecting to marketplaces in several countries. The higher order volumes and restricted working conditions have helped us learn and refine our methods to provide even better support to our clients.
3) What are the most preferred products bought online in the Benelux region?
The most popular products bought online in Belgium are pharmaceuticals, health and beauty products, food, toys, and equipment for home working and gardening. In the Netherlands, the same products are popular both in retail and online, with IT, sports, home and living, and food topping the list.
