Vanuatu - Postal and financial services disruption following earthquake

23 December, 2024

Update

The designated operator of Vanuatu, Vanuatu Post Limited, would like to inform other Union member countries and their designated operators that a 7.3-magnitude earthquake hit Vanuatu on 17 December 2024, disrupting Internet connectivity and international flights in and out of the country.   This natural disaster has caused significant structural concerns at the Vanuatu Post Limited building. Additionally, both international and domestic airports are temporarily closed for repairs, and road access to domestic and international seaports is blocked owing to a landslide. Internet connectivity and electricity are currently down, preventing the provision of financial services and the electronic handling of international inquiries using the Internet-Based Inquiry System (IBIS) and the iCare system.   While Vanuatu Post Limited will continue to operate, the quality of postal services for international inbound and outbound mail, as well as service delivery standards (including delivery times and other quality parameters), cannot be guaranteed for all postal items (letter-post, parcel-post and EMS items).   Vanuatu Post Limited thanks all Union member countries and their designated operators for their understanding. It will provide an update via EmIS once the situation has returned to normal.
